Our ClassroomOh the classroom... our home away from home. A place where not only learning is the utmost goal but where tears are dried, boo-boos bandaged, and stories are told.
I love building relationships with the students and their families. I start the year off with telling stories about my family, my dogs, and my childhood. I want the students to get to know me and feel like they have a personal connection with me. One of the stories I recently told to my second graders I hadn't even told my own mom! The students had to promise NOT to tell my mom. One of the student's said, "I promise I won't tell your mom. It shouldn't be a problem.... I don't even know your mom!" Through strong relationships trust is built. Students trust that.... • the classroom is a safe learning environment; • their voices will be heard; • their needs will be met; • their concerns can be voiced; • their teacher will be fair. Our classroom is a place where children are active not passive learners. Students are encouraged to be risk takers, to think and act independently, and most importantly ask questions about what they are learning and the world around them. The IB classroom provides an amazing setting for children to think and grow, both educationally and emotionally. My goal for all my students and their families is for second grade to be an unforgettable year full of fun, laughter, learning, and of course lots of stories! Mrs. Durbin |
